Midterm Exam Helpful Hints

How to study for the Midterm Exam

1. Listening
Try to listen to English as much as possible in a way that you can test your comprehension. For example:
  • Watch TV and put the captions on
  • Watch a movie with a friend and have them test your comprehension
  • Listen to the radio with a friend and have them test your comprehension
  • Listen to your favorite songs and then google the lyrics and test your comprehension
  • Take TOEFL CDs out of the library and work on the listening part
  • Talk with a friend and test your comprehension
2. Grammar
The grammar section will include:
Simple Present Tense
Simple Past Tense
Future Tense
Present Perfect Tense
Adverb Clauses
Modals/Phrasal Modals

To practice, go back through your book and test your knowledge by re-doing exercises. (You have the answers.) Also, review all of your old worksheets and old tests. (Again, you have the answers.) Finally, do the exercises that are located on this blog for practice. Check this page in the coming days...I will try to link to new worksheets for you.

3. Reading
Re-read all of your textbook reading assignments. Keep reading Wuthering Heights. Go online and try to read an article in English, something that you find interesting. Try to read for at least 30 minutes a day.

4. Writing
For the exam you will need to write a full 5 paragraph essay. Continue to practice writing coherent paragraphs in class. Review all of your notes from class on writing 5 paragraph essays. To warm up for this exam, try to write 1-3 small 5 paragraph essays on the topic of your choice. If you want, e-mail them to me and I will give you feedback.

Here is additional information that you should review for this section of the exam:
Wordstorm: The Visual Brainstorming Tool (Very cool! If you find that you have trouble focusing your thoughts on a topic, this tool is for you!)
